General information

Portuguese transplanted the Mango in India, where is still currently widely cultivated. Its previous name was "Manga" and according the linguists, its root comes from Sanskrit "am". The first cultivations seem coming from the slopes of Himalaya, from the Ceylon island and from Andamane islands.

This stately tree, that is used to reach 30m height, is strongly linked to the history of Oriental Religions: in the Dravidian India, a "mystic marriage" is used to being celebrated between the Mango tree and human being to reinforce the women fertility.
